Week 4: Life of Leisure

Week 4:

This weekend I planned my daughter’s birthday at an indoor amusement park which was recommended by someone from my sister’s work. I looked at the website and the birthday packages and it all seemed pretty good. I filled out the reservation form online and it said you should expect a call within 24 hours to confirm the reservation and collect the deposit. Not receiving the phone call at all should have been the warning to select another venue. Not heeding this, I called Jeepers Amusement Paradise, made the reservation and gave them my credit card to charge the deposit. I also called a day in advance to confirm they had my pinata order and they would fill it with candy. Sounded easy enough, didn’t go through the normal due diligence of checking out the venue and speaking through the party coordinator in person prior to booking the party since this place was recommended to my sister.

Sunday, October 25, 2009
I planned to wake up early to make cupcakes for my daughter’s birthday party but ended up staying up too late so I woke up shortly after 9 am. Thankfully, by the time I woke up my older daughter already baked the cupcakes, I just needed for them to cool so I can frost them while they were at church. Thanks, Mariss!  The picture above shows the finished cupcakes that we brought to the indoor amusement park.

12:45 pm
My kids get back from church with my parents and my daughter changed into her casual party clothes, then went next door to get her friends who were riding with us for to the party. My nephew’s friend arrived with him earlier so he had a buddy too. After my daughter’s BFF was dropped off, we all loaded into my sister’s SUV on the way to the party. My sister has a rule in her car called “Dance Car” so during one particularly long song, we kicked off dance car and everyone had to do their seated dance moves, this was a great ice breaker for all the kids. We “danced” to Miley Cyrus’ song and I got some video of that which I will upload to Facebook.

1:20 pm
We arrived at the venue a little before our party time and it seems they don’t have a record of our party at all. I requested the ride wristbands for the kids then got them off to ride the rides and play while I sorted out the situation. While waiting for the table to get setup, my sister and I ordered the pizzas for the party. We ended up hosting our party getting the kids rounded up to eat, do the cupcake, ice cream, and finally the pinata. We let the kids loose after doing the pinata to go spend their tokens and ride the rides again. Despite, the snafu with the party details, the kids had a blast! I’m so glad my parents, my sister, and my older daughter were there to help keep track of the kids because the security at the place was pretty lax. I think my head was spinning the entire time from all the noise, kids running around, and trying to make sure we knew where all the kids in our party were.

4:30 pm
We arrived back at the house, Giovana opened her presents, then went with my mom to drop off her BFF. I was exhausted and wanted to go back to sleep but my mom invited the kids next door to swim. My mom stayed out there with the kids at the pool, I think I fell asleep in the patio for a little bit. I’m a bit out of practice on the kids parties.

Week 3: Life of Leisure

I’m officially three weeks into the “Life of Leisure” chapter. To recap, I’ve moved to Arizona in less than 3 weeks by getting rid of all my furniture, sending my car full of things on an auto transporter, this is the big truck with a bunch of cars hanging from it, then renting an SUV to drive my clothes down with a quick stop in LA.

The Drive
I drove down to LA and stayed at my cousin Genelle’s new apartment and we had a great time catching up at Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles. I had the chicken breast and waffles, she had the chicken salad sandwich, which I’m planning to get next time, it was yummy! The next morning we had breakfast at Good Stuff in El Segundo, so glad we had the big breakfast because I was able to drive straight through to my mom’s house with just quick stops for gas and snacks. By the way, it’s not a good idea to have Pop Rocks as a road trip snack because you have to keep tilting your head back to get the candy in your mouth. If you’re driving by yourself, I learned it’s best to keep eyes on the road because there were giant semi-trucks I had to zoom by. I made it to my mom’s house a little bit late because I exited too early on one freeway, thankfully my sister Czarina got me back on track, she is my personal positioning service (the GPS died because none of the cigarette lighters would charge it).

The first few days in Arizona, I would read a lot and take naps during the day. Now that the kids are back in school, I get up around 7 am to make breakfast or pop Eggo waffles into the toaster and drop off. Then it would be time to hit the gym, afterwards I can work on my various projects.

The gym
About the gym, I’ve had a membership to 24 hour fitness for ages and paid $5 a month. However, the closest one is about 30 minutes away. I went once to see how I would like the gym and I was underwhelmed by the experience. As motivated as I am, I don’t really want to drive that far to workout. When telling my family about the trek to the gym, my mom mentioned LA Fitness was close and it was a new. I went to check it out the next day and upon walking in saw about 3 cute guys, bonus! OK getting back to the gym, they had a ton of fitness classes, cardio equipment upstairs, new weights, huge basketball court on a bouncy floor, a lap pool, and one free personal training session. The rates were pretty reasonable so I decided to sign up. By the way, I don’t play basketball at all and I have no intention of doing laps in the pool. I was pretty much sold by the new facilities and the cute guys. It’s great to have good scenery while working out because it breaks up the monotony. At the end of the week, I convinced my sister to go to my personal training session with me and after our session, she ended up signing up too. In the last week, we’ve gone to Zumba twice, we worked out with weights, did cardio, I also went to yoga. She went to the gym with me 4x in a week and that’s more than she’s ever been in her life!

The rest of the family is now getting on the fitness kick. The kids are taking turns using the Wii fit program and everyone has a Mii which is to track BMI. Sadly, I have a fat Mii but she’s steadily inching that BMI down to normal levels. My dad remains an inspiration because he bikes for 30 mins and does his dumbbells 6 days a week. He also tracks everything he eats and logs his fitness activities in Excel spreadsheets, this is something I need to incorporate.

Getting organized
So perhaps I’m a little OCD when it comes to getting organized, this week I created spreadsheets on my phone with the house budget, my budget, and my sister’s budget. This way, we can add things we need to purchase on the fly and see how it affects the remaining budget for the month. I’m also creating a spreadsheet of what will go into each room, what is needed, which are wants, and how much will all cost. We kept talking about all the things that we wanted to get for the house without really knowing how much we had to pay for so the spreadsheets should keep us grounded in reality.

Love my calendar
Today, I was reading the paper and found a couple cool activities to do with family but the events were in December. I decided to put them in my Google calendar then invite the rest of the family via email so they can get it on their calendars too. Now I don’t need to keep the newspaper because I put the date, time, the website, phone number, address, and a summary of the activities we can do at the event. I showed my dad how to add things to his Google calendar and my daughter said she would teach him how to use his calendar because she already figured it out on her own. She’s super cute, she changes the themes in her email and shared her Google calendar with me as she was exploring Gmail.

I also booked my daughter’s birthday party, created the invitations with her, and put the invitations in her backpack to give to her friends at school on Monday. We just need to wait to see who RSVPs so I can adjust the reservation then we’re good to go.

It’s about 2 am now and I spent the day cooking. For breakfast, chilaquiles in salsa verde, lunch was shrimp penne alfredo, the kids liked that so much, I had to make a new batch for dinner. The dinner version was shrimp, broccoli, mushroom rotini alfredo and my sister is packing that for lunch. I also made trail mix: raw almonds, dried cranberries, and white chocolate chips, then put those in sandwich bags as snacks for everyone on Monday. With that said, I’m logging off and calling it a night!

From Crackberry to Boostberry

During the last week, I switched my mobile carrier from AT&T to the $50 Boost Unlimited everything plan. I mean, it sounds attractive to go from $80 – $150/month down to a flat fee of $50 without taxes or anything else and the bonus is better service than the Ghettro phones. I purchased a cute little flip phone on Amazon which came with a SIM card and ported my number over last Wednesday.

It turns out I can’t use a regular flip phone because it’s hard for me to text on it, the screen was tiny and I had no contacts on there because all of my contacts lived in Outlook. I heard that the Nextel Blackberry 8350i (iDen) can be converted to Boost with a little bit of work. I scoured through Howardforums and the Crackberry forums to see how to do it but a quick search on Google got me an easy set of instructions to follow to “hack” my Blackberry into  Boostberry. I know this sounds a little geeky and most of you are probably thinking, “Why on earth would you do that??? Just get a phone that does what you want on the mobile provider you’re on.” I like the challenge of getting technology to work where I want it to work and I heard other people did it already. I also saw on craigslist and on ebay people charging up to $100 to convert these phones and I simply wasn’t going to pay that because I knew I could do it myself.

——————GEEKY BORING STUFF SECTION——————
First, I needed to move my contacts from Outlook to Gmail contacts since I was no longer going to be using Outlook. I synced Outlook to my Gmail contacts using Google Sync. I was pleasantly surprised that Google Sync didn’t import duplicates, I had some cleaning up to do of my Gmail Contacts because I never really fixed those contacts but other than that I was set.

The basic steps to follow to convert the Blackberry 8350i to Boost:

  1. Activate a Boost SIM in a regular Boost phone (the flip phone I already purchased worked well)Note if you try to activate in the Blackberry, it might not work because that phone isn’t officially supported by Boost and the following steps need to be followed to access the internet and send text messages.
  2. Download and install Blackberry Desktop Manager to PC, if the box didn’t come with the CD
  3. Download the service books
  4. Backup existing Nextel service books
  5. Then after it’s been backed up, delete the service books from the phone
  6. Delete Browser from the Blackberry
  7. Alt + {S}{B}{E}{B}). A message reading Legacy SB Restore Enabled should appear on your screen.
  8. Install the service books you downloaded in step 3
After following these steps, your Blackberry should be able to send picture/text messages and browse the web. Even without doing these steps putting the activated SIM into the 8350i should already let you place phone and Direct Connect (walkie-talkie) calls. The only caveat is that Blackberry Messenger and Email doesn’t work (huge bummer) because there is no support for that from Boost.
Other apps I’ve downloaded to get my Boostberry to work exactly I want it to work.
  • Facebook app (essential!)
  • Pandora (internet radio) – with my microSD of music, I’m all set for the gym
  • Gmail – this also notifies me of incoming messages, it’s push style so I don’t need the Blackberry Email
  • Google Sync – to get my Gmail contacts and Google calendar on my phone
  • Google Maps
  • IM+ from shapeservices ($39.95) – lets me login to all IM’s (Yahoo IM, MSN, Googletalk, Skype, Twitter, Facebook IM)
  • Update: Just loaded BeejiveIM, it creates the iPhone like bubbles for instant message on (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Googletalk, and Jabber) it’s only $19.95 and there is a 30-day free trial.
  • Snaptu for RSS feeds, Facebook updates, Twitter, weather, etc.
  • I read Mashable, TechCrunch, BusinessWeek, LifeHacker, & the NY Times, Snaptu lets me post articles I find interesting to both Facebook and Twitter…awesome!
——————END OF GEEKY BORING STUFF——————

OK, so after using this phone, I don’t totally love it. I like the ID or industrial design of the Nokia E71 because it was sleek and felt good in my hands. The 8350i feels like a fat piece of plastic by comparison. Texting on the keys is hard because the keys are harder to push in and it doesn’t feel as good as texting on the E71. This phone is also glitchy, I looked for newer firmware but the version I have is the latest. Other than that, I’m loving how the Boostberry is helping me stay organized. I’ve added my niece and daughter’s dance classes to my calendar, Zumba on Saturday’s with my sister, and story time for my niece at the library.

As a side note, I stopped using my iPod Nano (can’t even find it) since I started using my smartphone as my music device at the gym. All I need is to get FM radio on the phone like I did on the E71 and I would be truly happy. See how easy it is to make me happy 🙂

Day 1 in the Life of Leisure

Friday, September 25, 2009 marks the last day of work and the start of a new phase in my life. I like to call this chapter, the “Life of Leisure”, since I have the luxury of time to explore infinite possibilities. My immediate goals include moving to Arizona, being a “stay at home mom”, going to the gym everyday, and eventually getting a job at Godaddy. I fixated on Godaddy is because I’ve used them to purchase domains over the years and after I read about the company culture, I decided, I had to work there.

I know I haven’t exactly described a leisurely existence and perhaps it’s too soon to grasp that concept. In fact, the weekend has been a whirlwind of activity. Friday night I went out for dinner/drinks with my co-workers and their families, I had a great time hanging out them and watching their kids play, so adorable! This was probably the first team I’ve worked with where the families were integrated into our team activities, something to consider for the future.

When I got home I removed work email and calendar from my phone, that also removed my contacts, so I thought how can I manage my contacts and calendar then have it sync to something in the cloud so it’s always backed up. Luckily, Google sync will synchronize my calendar, contacts, and email with my phone, YES!!  This is exactly what I was looking for, I will get the push email and calendar events just like when I was using Outlook. Of course, I immediately added the remainder of the weekend activities into my calendar and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to setup on my Nokia E71 phone.

Saturday, I had breakfast with my sister and got my apartment about 80% packed before getting ready for Cassie’s birthday dinner. I got home exhausted!

Sunday, I got up early to have breakfast with my friend Angela. Then spent the remainder of the day packing up the kitchen and having friends pick up furniture. Of course, all the times my friends said they were going to come get furniture, I marked in my calendar so I could make sure I didn’t run off to do an errand at the designated time. I don’t know how people functioned before PDA’s and smartphones. Hopefully, the apartment will be 100% packed on Monday and I’ll have time to do laundry.

Hooked on Mafia Wars

Recently, I sent my resume to Zynga in San Francisco. They make online games which tie into Facebook or Myspace, a few of their titles are Farmville, Zynga Poker, Vampire Wars, and my favorite Mafia Wars. I had been on Vampire Wars for about 2 minutes previously and quickly lost interest because I didn’t really get it.

I like to understand the product when I apply to a company, so I signed up for Mafia Wars since I’ve seen some of my Facebook friends playing that. I signed up at the beginning of Labor Day weekend and quickly became obsessed with the game. My old morning routine used to be; check calendar, check email, respond to anything urgent, then start getting ready for work. Now, I get up about 15 minutes earlier, just to do as many jobs as the energy counter allows within the game, in addition to my previous morning routine.

While waiting for my energy to re-up to do more crime jobs, I fight other mafias to gain experience points, help out friends with their mafias, and send virtual gifts. Once I’ve exhausted everything I can do in Mafia Wars, I got started on Farmville and Yoville. They aren’t as sticky as Mafia Wars, where I keep wanting to come back so I can do more jobs. With my cousins so involved in Farmville and I stopped killing all my plants this game started to ‘grow’ on me. My obsession with Mafia Wars became ridiculously apparent when I asked one of my co-workers what his strategy was for leveling up in the game. Everyone else at the table then asked what game we were playing and suggested I get into WOW.

I want to apologize to my Facebook friends if I’m spamming you with notifications, I try to undo them when I’m playing.

Experiment: 1 year without satellite or cable TV

Last July my satellite TV subscription ended and I gave back the TV I was borrowing. During this time, I thought, why not give up satellite service for a month which will save me about $65 and then purchase a new flat panel TV for my living room. My one month experiment turned to two, it’s now been over a year with no TV and no cable/satellite service.

In order to get my TV/movie fix, I put my computer monitor in my bedroom and hooked up my work laptop to it so I can watch TV shows over the internet or streaming movies. In September, I brought home an HP TouchSmart computer and was so much more convenient than using my laptop that I didn’t really see a need to purchase a TV anymore. The TouchSmart has a 720p screen resolution so watching HD movies was a good experience. The 25.5″ TouchSmart has a 1080p screen resolution and I’m thinking of getting that at the end of the summer.

I did turn on satellite service for about a month to test out the user experience for hooking up a set top box to the TouchSmart using S-video, L/R audio to view TV and my DVR content on the computer. The setup through Media Center was a huge pain and I found I wasn’t watching enough TV to justify the cost of keeping DirectTV service when most of the same content I wanted to see was available for free on the internet. That was including watching newly released movies which are streamed over the internet. It took some searching to find out which streaming movies were of better quality than others but overall it was easier than trying to find someone to go to the movies with at the last minute. I’m somewhat reconsidering DirectTV again since it’s football season but then I can always go downstairs to watch football at the bar.

The switch to internet TV bought me more time to do other things instead of waiting for commercials to fast forward on my DVR. My viewing habits changed because I would search for shows I really wanted to watch instead of turning on the TV to keep me company while I sat on the computer to work or IM with friends. I had a stack of books and magazines I wanted to read that I was finally able to because I wasn’t spending hours watching TV. I also workout a little bit more because I can go to the gym and sit on the stationary bike if I can’t tear myself away from a particular book.

Here are some of the sites I would check to catch my favorite shows and movies:

  • www.hulu.com (I use this a lot because I mark my fav full episode shows and it puts it in my queue, plus Hulu Desktop Beta is now available so I can go thru the list of shows with the remote for my computer making it feel like a TV watching experience)

Here are some interesting statistics which show America’s TV viewing habits.

Studies from Nielsen and Leichtman Research Group (LRG): A2/M2 Three Screen Report 4Q2008.  In the U.S. each month the average TV watcher soaks in 151 hours of television (an all-time high)
  • The average online video viewer watches some three hours’ worth of content on the web
  • People who use mobile video watch almost four hours of video on their phones and other wireless devices.
  • 8% of adults who watch video online strongly agree that they now watch TV less often, while 75% strongly disagree
  • 1% of adults view recent TV shows online daily, and 8% weekly – compared to 6% weekly last year
